Three Thoughtful Ways to Brighten the Holiday Season

While we often get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holidays, here are three thoughtful ways to plug more fully into the spirit of the season:

1. Be Present
Unfortunately, we tend to make the holiday season about the wrong kind of presents.

'Tis the season to embrace being more present. The time we have on this earth is a gift.  Slow down. Enjoy these moments.

Like a wide-eyed child, seek out the joy and wonder in the world. Look for the beauty in the simplest of things. Be kind to others. Share a smile. Breathe. Celebrate the time you have with the loved ones around you - your family, your friends, your pets.  Reflect on the good things in your life. Soak yourself with gratitude, count your blessing, and focus on the true spirit of the holidays - the gift of presence.

2. Write a handwritten letter
Go beyond the traditional holiday card and write a personalized letter. Yet instead of sharing about what you did this year, focus your letter on what you love, like, and admire about the individual you are sending it to.

Share what you appreciate about your friendship, your relationship, and all the ways they bring joy into your life. The memories that always make you smile. The experiences with them that you are grateful for. Write about the positive differences you see them make, and how you see them shine their light in the world.

If you are a manager, a genuine handwritten note is a simple way to appreciate and thank your employees. Share the strengths they bring to your team, recognize their accomplishments for the year, and acknowledge the valuable contributions they make every day.

3. Volunteer
‘Tis the season of giving, and one of the most powerful gifts we can give is our time. The holidays are a great time to be of service, whether you’re serving up meals at a food bank, delivering necessities and toys to families in need, singing carols, playing cards, or just listening to the resident’s stories in the nursing home.

Volunteer to read books to children at a local library or school, walk dogs at the shelter, donate blood, or send a care package to a soldier. Drop off inspirational cards at the hospital, help a grieving friend, cook a warm meal, or run errands for a sick neighbor.

Kindness never goes out of style. Share these thoughtful gifts all year long...
..and never underestimate the value sharing your love, energy, and time
does to brighten our world!
